Chinese New Year in Sydney

Tony Law

As Australia's largest city, Sydney has developed a bustling economy, pleasant climate and beautiful scenery. In recent years, it has attracted a large number of Asian migrants and tourists, especially Chinese ones, to live and travel here. The government pursues a multicultural policy, so that people and cultures of all ethnic groups are respected and tolerated, and people live and work in peace and contentment to contribute to society.

There are many celebrations and cultural exchanges during Chinese New Year every year. There is a festive atmosphere, the Sydney Bridge and the Opera House is lit up, there are also various theatrical performances, lion dances, dragon dances, parades, dragon boat races, lantern displays and so on. Even shopfronts are carefully decorated to welcome Asian guests.

I have moved to Australia for many years. I have witnessed the changes and changes in Sydney over the years, and I like this vibrant city more and more.

Sydney Chinatown, located in the commercial centre of Sydney, has gourmet food, shops, bars, and more. During the Chinese New Year, a lot of festive lighting is added. When night falls, the bright lights turn on; a bustling scene that has become a good place for many locals to relax and entertain themselves.

During Chinese New Year, the Sze Yup Temple, located in Sydney Australia, is very popular. Many Chinese people come here to burn incense and pray for blessings, and many Western friends join in too.

5、Chinese New Year Lantern Festival

Photo taken at Darling Harbour, Sydney on 17 Feb 2019.

The Sydney Chinese New Year Lantern Festival has been held in Darling Harbour several times, and each year, the scale gets bigger and bigger. In addition to large lanterns, there are also performances by Chinese professional art teams and Chinese food, so you can still feel homely connection even though you are in a foreign land. There is a strong nostalgia, when the lanterns are lit, thousands of lights are on, the venues surrounded by tall buildings, and it is very lively. The buildings behind them change colour from time to time to match the festive atmosphere of the lantern festival.

Tony Law
