NY22
Rick Schatzberg
I imagine NY22 to be a river flowing from headwaters at the Canadian border to its delta in the Bronx.A mostly rural two-lane highway,Twenty Two is not the principal artery it once was.For 337 miles it snakes along a changed landscape but cuts a deep path through layers of history.I am steadily drawn upstream, towards the North Country.
Informed by literary and photographic road trip genres,my work departs from the tradition of quickly moving through America.I reinterpret a place in flux through repeated sessions. The river where I set my foot just now is gone…it's now this and then this.My photographs exist as glances, subjective and incomplete evidence of fragmentary encounters.
I first became familiar with portions of Route 22 when my wife and I would drive from our home in Northwestern Connecticut to Northern Vermont to visit our son.We were intent upon only taking back roads and made this 6+hour road trip many times.I became increasingly intrigued by how this historic stretch of road reflected so much of America and decided to spend time photographing it.This work was made over a one-year period, from the spring of 2014 through the spring of 2015.During that period,I would spend days or sometimes weeks at a time driving north towards Canada and then back south to New York City.I gave myself permission to wander east and west of Route 22 as though I was following tributaries that fed the principal river I was charting.I self-published a book of this work in 2015.At the time I intended to continue the project with a second phase that included portraits, however I moved on to other projects.Six years have now passed, but I am starting to think it may be time to head to the North Country again.

Rick Schatzberg
