Fogotting island
Muhammad Fadli
Across the middle of Indonesia's Banda Sea, island of Rhun is synonymous with isolation. As early as several centuries ago, Ruen Island was not so depressed. Nutmeg used to grow almost exclusively in Banda Islands. Ruen Island is regarded as one of the earliest overseas colonies of Britain. When the Brayda Treaty was promulgated in 1667, the British officially ceded it to Holland. With the spread of nutmeg in the early 19th century, the Dutch monopoly on nutmeg also ended. Today, there is hardly any glory left in the past on Ruen Island. Nutmeg is still planted by local people, and it is used as money to exchange clothes and ship engines. With the glory of history fading away, Ruen Island has actually become an island forgotten by the world. The spice trade has brought wealth to Europeans who have crossed the ocean, but it is a curse to the aborigines of the island.
