El Romero Solar, 125 kilometers north of La Serena, Chile. This 246-megawatt photovoltaic plant supplies the Google Data Center in Santiago with 100% of its electrical energy needs (80 megawatts).
Amanecer Solar CAP, near Copiapó, Chile. This 100-megawatt photovoltaic plant supplies the majority of the power to the nearby Cerro Negro Norte iron ore mine.
Parque Solar Carrera Pinto (foreground) and Parque Solar Fotovoltaico Luz de Norte (background), northeast of Copiapó, Chile. 97-megawatt Carrera Pinto and 141-megawatt Luz de Norte supply power to Chilean population centers via the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (SEN).
Transmission towers, Atacama Region, Chile. New transmission lines move renewable energy to population centers in southern Chile via the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (SEN).
Cerro Dominador, 25 kilometers west-northwest of Sierra Gorda, Chile. Constructed around a 252-meter-high receiver, this 110-megawatt concentrated solar plant includes 17.5 hours of molten salt storage capacity, and is part of a hybrid facility that incorporates a 100-megawatt photovoltaic plant.
Parque Eólico Valle de los Vientos, near Calama, Chile. A 90-megawatt wind farm, comprised of 45 wind turbines, delivers its power to the Sistema Eléctrico Nacional (SEN).
Pampa Elvira Solar, Minera Gaby, 120 kilometers southwest of Calama, Chile. This 27.5-megawatt solar thermal array supplies the majority of the thermal energy needed for the electrowinning process at Minera Gaby.
Mina Chuquicamata, north of Calama, Chile. A small section of the mine pit reveals the vast quantity of waste rock produced as a result of open-pit copper mining.
Mina Zaldívar, 175 kilometers southeast of the city of Antofagasta, Chile. In 2020, this became the first copper mine to operate with 100% renewable energy including wind, solar, and hydro sources.
Proyecto Solar San Andrés, 25 kilometers northeast of Copiapó, Chile. This 50-megawatt photovoltaic plant uses a single-axis tracking system in north-south orientation so that the panels follow the movement of the sun in an east-west direction.
Changing Perspectives: Atacama Renewable Energy & Mining in the High Desert of Chile
Jamey Stillings
Atacama: Renewable Energy and Mining in the High Desert of Chile represents a new chapter of Changing Perspectives.
My work spans fine art, documentary and commissioned projects. A passionate curiosity about people, cultures, technology, and the environment is a guiding force in my photography and life. I build well-executed productions paired with an approach that encourages collaboration and is open to unexpected opportunities. Increasingly, I seek projects that provide the occasion to study a subject in depth. This may be realized by documenting the evolution of a subject for years, or by recording the intensity of a single day. Within a diverse range of photographic interests, my project work focuses on issues of sustainability, in particular, renewable energy.
Changing Perspectives: Renewable Energy and the Shifting Human Landscape is my current long-term project.
Chile produces a third the world’s copper and has one of the largest known lithium reserves. Each day, we utilize Chilean copper and lithium in our cars, computers, and smart phones. Northern Chile’s mining industry is heavily dependent on imported coal, diesel and natural gas for its energy. Yet, the geography of the Atacama Desert provides Chile with excellent solar and wind potential. New renewable energy projects are supplying electricity to the norther grid, electricity and solar thermal energy directly to mines, transmitting power to population centers in the south, and reducing mining’s dependence on fossil fuels. As the cost of solar and wind electricity production has dropped below that of coal, renewable energy is now a viable economic opportunity for mines with the added benefit of reducing the industry's carbon footprint.

Jamey Stillings
9. Mina Zaldívar,
