NET-ZERO TRANSITION

IT    La pandemia di coronavirus ha causato la più grave recessione economica degli ultimi anni. Questa crisi, tuttavia, può trasformarsi in un'opportunità per una transizione globale verso un futuro più sostenibile.

La Terra si sta riscaldando rapidamente a causa dei gas serra rilasciati dalle attività antropiche che hanno raggiunto i livelli più alti degli ultimi 800.000 anni. L'accordo di Parigi, firmato da 194 paesi, mira a limitare il riscaldamento globale a 1,5°C al fine di ridurre le conseguenze catastrofiche del cambiamento climatico. Per raggiungere questo obiettivo, la comunità globale deve azzerare le emissioni di miliardi di attività antropiche in tutto il mondo.

L'Islanda, paese isolato nel clima rigido del Nord Atlantico e martoriata dalla crisi finanziaria del 2008, è riuscita a trasformare la sua economia adottando modelli sostenibili di produzione e di consumo. Nell’arco di pochi decenni, il paese ha ridotto l’uso dei combustibili fossili ed è passato alla produzione di elettricità al 100% da fonti rinnovabili. Questa transizione ha stimolato una generazione di innovatori e imprenditori che ha ricercato nuovi modelli di business basati sulla green economy. Vivendo direttamente l’effetto del riscaldamento globale con lo scioglimento dei loro ghiacciai, l'Islanda è diventata un leader globale nelle tecnologie per la produzione di energia pulita e la riduzione delle emissioni inquinanti. La transizione ad un'economia a impatto zero è realizzata, ad esempio, grazie a serre high-tech per la coltivazione di frutta e ortaggi alimentate esclusivamente da energia rinnovabile, sistemi di acquacoltura sostenibile, tecnologie innovative per la cattura e lo smaltimento dei gas serra e iniziative mirate a ripristinare le foreste distrutte nei secoli precedenti. Questa piccola nazione è in grado di indicarci diversi modi possibili per affrontare la crisi climatica globale e creare sinergie per una transizione verso un futuro più sostenibile.

EN   The coronavirus pandemic has brought about the most severe economic downturn the world has seen in recent years. However, this crisis is an unprecedented opportunity for a shift that will propel the world toward a sustainable living. Earth is warming up at a fast pace because heat-trapping gases released by human activities have reached unprecedented levels in at least the last 800,000 years. Paris agreement, signed by 194 countries, aims at limiting global warming to 1.5°C in order to avoid the catastrophic consequences of climate changes. To stop global warming, the world needs to zero out emissions from billions of different sources worldwide. Isolated and challenged by a harsh climate and battered by the financial crisis in 2008, Iceland has successfully transformed its economy. In a span of a few decades, the country moved away from fossil fuels and shifted to 100% electricity production from renewable sources. This transition nurtured a community of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship that explored new ways to make business with minimal impact on the environment. While they realised that their glaciers were melting, Iceland has become a global leader in technologies that foster green energy and emission reduction. Their net-zero transition is propelled by high-tech greenhouses to grow organic vegetables, sustainable fish farming, ecotourism, breakthrough processes for carbon capture and disposal, and joint efforts to restore the forests that were lost in earlier centuries. This small nation indicates plenty of possible ways to tackle the global climate crisis and create synergies for a transition to a sustainable and prosperous future.
