Visions of a photographer during lockdown

On 23 March 2020 the president of South Africa announced a total lockdown for its citizens in order to prevent rapid spreading of the covid virus. Day one of lockdown started on 26 March 2020.

None of us knew then what to expect and what was still to come. As a photographer I decided to take one photo a day every day during lockdown, we were let to believe lockdown would last till 16 April 2020 (21 days).  I stuck to my one photo a day for 50 days, lockdown is still implemented at the moment, more than a year down the line.

My subjects would be things and people in and around our house. This panel of mine consist of ten photos of the people and the interactivities we had during the mentioned 50 days.

The cast or actors were members of my family, fortunately we have two houses on our property; with me and my wife (Christine) living in the one house and my daughter (Neille) and her children (two daughters, Ankia aged 9 and Megan aged 12, and the two boys, Dylan aged 15 and the late arrival Nino who was 2 years old at the time). Dawid Booysen, our gardener, who has over the years become part of the family, decided to stay in a small room on the property with us during the expected lockdown period.

Some photos were done at the spur of the moment and others I pre-planned. 

1.Day 2: Family Structure – 27 March 2020 –Neille (the Mother) with her two oldest children Dylan and Megan at the bottom.

2.Day 9: Isolation – 4 April 2020 – Dawid in his small room surrounded by all his valuables.

3.Day 10: – Tonight we are having Chinese – 5 April 2020– During lockdown it was a big thing for our family to entertain ourselves and we would prepare some international dishes and the kids would dress appropriately, Megan on left and Ankia on right.

4.Day 12: – Blues – 7 April 2020– Ankia was spotted sitting very depressed in a corner outside Megan’s room where she sprayed some graffiti on a wall.

5.Day 13: – It’s believed to be absolutely true in fairyland – 8 April 2020– Little Nino is helping Casper the friendly ghost to water the flowers, a graffiti mural I did for the kids a week earlier.

6.Day 33: –In The News - We are fighting a war, yet again– 28 April 2020– Christine reading the paper, at this stage we were all watching the news to find out whether lockdown would or could be lifted.

7.Day 35: – Family portrait– 30 April 2020– I had to portray the new real with a family portrait sitting, Dylan and Megan at back and Neille, Ankia and Christine in front.  Nino refused to sit for this photo.

8.Day 37: – Is this real life;  Is this just a fantasy– 2 May 2020– Dylan depressed in the corner of the room.

9.Day 42: – Locked In– 7 May 2020– Nino at the front door looking onto the street through the security bars.

10.Day 47: – The mood of the day– 12 May 2020– My father passed away a couple of days earlier and nothing depicted the sombre mood in the house better than Ankia with some freshly uprooted flowers clutched in her hands.

那时我们谁也不知道会发生什么，还会发生什么。作为一名摄影师，我决定在封锁期间每天拍一张照片，我们被告知封锁将持续到2020年4月16日(21天)。我坚持每天一张照片50天，封锁目前仍在实施，一年多了。

 我的主题是房子里和房子周围的事物和人。我的这个组照由十张照片组成，这些照片是我们在上面提到的50天里的人和互动的照片。

演员是我的家人，幸运的是我们家有两套房子；我和我的妻子(克里斯汀)住在一所房子里，我的女儿(尼尔)和她的孩子(两个女儿，安基亚9岁，梅根12岁，两个男孩，迪伦15岁，尼诺当时2岁)。我们的园丁达维德·布伊森(Dawid Booysen)多年来一直是这个家庭的一员，他决定在预期的封锁期内和我们一起住在酒店的一个小房间里。 有些照片是一时冲动拍的，有些是我预先计划好的。

1.第二天:家庭结构。2020年3月27日——尼尔(母亲)和她的两个最大的孩子迪伦和梅根。 

2.第九天:隔离。2020年4月4日——达维德在他的小房间里，被他所有的贵重物品包围着。 

3.第10天:今晚我们吃中餐。2020年4月5日。在封锁期间，这是我们一家人娱乐自己的一件大事，我们会准备一些国际菜肴，孩子们会穿着得体，梅根在左边，安基亚在右边。 

4.第12天:布鲁斯。2020年4月7日。有人看到安基亚非常沮丧地坐在梅根房间外的一个角落里，她在墙上涂鸦。 

5.第13天:这在仙境中被认为是绝对正确的。2020年4月8日。小尼诺正在帮助友好的鬼魂卡斯珀浇花，这是我一周前为孩子们创作的涂鸦壁画。 

6.第33天:在新闻中——我们正在打一场战争，又一次——2020年4月28日——克里斯汀在读报纸，在这个阶段，我们都在看新闻，看看封锁是否会或可能被解除。 

7.第35天:全家福。2020年4月30日–我必须用全家福来描绘新的现实，迪伦和梅根坐在后面，内勒、安基亚和克里斯汀在前面。尼诺拒绝坐在这里拍照。 

8.第37天:这是真实的生活吗；这只是一个幻想吗——2020年5月2日——迪伦沮丧地躺在房间的角落里。 

9.第42天:锁定。2020年5月7日。尼诺站在前门，透过安全栅栏看着街道。 

10.第47天：当天的心情——2020年5月12日——我父亲在几天前去世了，没有什么比安基亚手里拿着一些刚拔掉的花更能描述房子里的阴郁气氛了。
